Horde Encounters

A horde encounter is quite different from monster and boss encounters. Rather than fight a single powerful monster, or a small group of enemies, hordes represent vast overwhelming throngs of enemies and each one you encounter is worse than the last.

You can't win the fight or even get any loot. All you can do is run for your lives.

What's Different?

  • Hordes deal damage differently. Instead of rolling and consulting a reference sheet, when it is the horde's turn, each player must roll the dice. Roll 5 (or better) or lose 2 health.

  • Hordes don't have a health score and heroes may not play any abilities or treasure cards that attack or damage hordes on their turns.

  • You have to run away to survive. During your turn, you must roll a certain number (or higher). If any hero fails, the encounter continues for another round for all players. However, abilities and treasure (such as the Luck Potion) may help the attempt to flee.

  • It gets harder with every new horde. There are four horde encounters in the deck and each one you encounter is bigger and harder to evade than the last. Against the first horde, every player must roll a 2 (or better) to escape. Against the next, every player must roll a 3, then a 4, then a 5.

  • You won't get any treasure from the horde.
